It’s easy to feel “out of touch” after retirement, without quite knowing why. Sometimes it’s not that you don’t have people—it’s that your connections have become blurry in your mind. A simple tool can help: a People Map.
How to Make Your People Map
Take a sheet of paper. Write your name in the center. Around it, create small circles for different groups:
- Family you’re close to.
- Family you miss or feel distant from.
- Old friends or colleagues you think about.
- Neighbors or community members you see often.
- People you’d like to know better.
What to Do With It
Look at the map and ask yourself:
- Who energizes me when I talk to them?
- Who do I quietly miss?
- Who might also be feeling lonely?
Choose one person each week to reach out to—a message, a call, a visit, even a simple “Thinking of you.”
Why It Works
Seeing your relationships laid out visually reminds you that you are not as alone as you sometimes feel. It also turns vague intentions (“I should reconnect with people”) into small, concrete steps.
Over time, your People Map can become not just a drawing, but a living network of support, warmth, and shared stories.
